Olomouc is a major transportation hub, where the key role is played primarily by road and railway transport, ensuring very good transport accessibility to other economic centres of the Czech Republic. Thanks to its function, size, and strategic location, the city also represents a natural catchment area for everyday commuting to work and school as well as services, shopping, and entertainment.

The basic road network in and around Olomouc is comprised of routes of international and national importance. The international E462 road provides a north-south link connecting Poland, Moravia and Austria. The D46 and D1 motorways connection at Vyškov provides a comfortable link to Brno and a further link to Prague (via the D1 motorway) or Bratislava (via the D2 motorway). The D1 motorway connects to the D35 motorway at Lipník nad Bečvou, providing a smooth and easy high-capacity traffic connection to Poland via Ostrava and Bohumín.

Olomouc is also an important railway junction with the central station located near the city centre. The Passengers Centre (ČD Centrum) at the Central Station offers high-grade service to its customers. Five railway lines go through the city, including the main line to Prague. The railway is being modernised by the construction of a connecting link between Corridors II and III Česká Třebová – Olomouc – Přerov. Olomouc boasts excellent transport links with Prague through a wide range of high-velocity express trains, which is a major competitive advantage well-appreciated by visitors and investors. Major Railway Lines:

  • No. 270 to Přerov, Ostrava and the opposite direction to Zábřeh, Česká Třebová, Prague (part of Railway Transit Corridors II and III)
  • No. 275 to Senice na Hané
  • No. 290 to Šternberk, Uničov, Šumperk
  • No. 301 to Prostějov, Nezamyslice
  • No. 310 to Krnov, Opava

Sustainable forms of transport in the city

Transport services in Olomouc are primarily ensured by Olomouc Mass Transit (DPMO). The backbone of the urban passenger system is made up of the continuously expanding tram track system, which is suitably extended by bus lines providing transport services in places beyond the reach of the rail network – housing areas, industrial zones, suburbs, and outer city districts. The routing of lines is adapted to the residential complexes with corresponding population density and areas with the greatest source/target of transportation demand. Olomouc mass transit is part of the Integrated Transport System of the Olomouc Region, integrating the major portion of railway, bus, and urban mass transport since January 2012.

The network of cycling routes is expanding in Olomouc, with new routes being built in the urban areas and linked to other municipalities around the city. By the end of 2023, 57,009 metres of cycling routes had been constructed in the territory of Olomouc, representing 69.1% of the total length of the cycling infrastructure planned (amounting to 82,501 m). The sharing of environmentally friendly means of transport is also well developed in the city – especially bicycles (bike-sharing) and e-scooters, supported by the city.

In the long term, Olomouc also systematically responds to the requirements of barrier-free and safe movement around the city. Since 2001, Olomouc has been gradually implementing the Barrier-Free Olomouc project to make the city accessible to all residents and visitors. Accessibility modifications in the public space involve public transport, pedestrian traffic, accessibility of public buildings, as well as leisure activities.

A domestic public airfield is located 3.5 km west of the city centre. It is currently intended for small aircraft (airplanes, gliders, helicopters, ultralight aircraft, balloons, and blimps) and is mainly used for sport purposes, training and test flights, etc. The airfield is operated by the Statutory City of Olomouc and managed by Sdružení letiště Olomouc, z. s. Its technical parameters are limited (two take-off and landing runways: concrete – 420 m long, and grass – 760 m long). More information at: https://www.lkol.cz.
