There was a year-on-year increase of more than 2 000 inhabitants in 2022, mainly due to the refugee crisis caused by the war in Ukraine. Olomouc is the country’s 6th most populous city. Education

Thanks to the university and a dense network of elementary and secondary schools, Olomouc is a major educational centre whose importance reaches far beyond the borders of the region. In terms of sectors, Olomouc has great potential for development, especially in the fields of natural sciences and medicine, including high-end activities in biotechnology, nanotechnology, and optoelectronics.

The regional level of education is above the national average, a promising outlook for the future development of the region. High-quality language education, for which Olomouc is renowned, is another competitive advantage of the city. Palacký University provides a wide range of curricula taught in over 20 foreign languages. There are 2 elementary schools with extended language curricula in Olomouc (Heyrovského – English at its lower primary school, and a choice between German, Spanish, and Russian at its higher primary school, and Hálkova – English from the 1st grade, and a second language – German or French – from the 6th grade). In September 2007, the Czech British International School and Nursery School was founded thanks to a financial support from international companies as well as the City of Olomouc. The school offers a comprehensive international primary curriculum in English and Czech to both foreign and local pupils. Bilingual teaching methods are used at the International Montessori School Olomouc and at Maple Bear Olomouc, the Czech-Canadian Kindergarten which is part of the world’s largest educational network, combining Canadian educational principles with 21st-century skills. Starting in September 2025, a primary school will be added to the kindergarten. Finnish teaching methods are applied at Aurora Preschool Academy. ZŠ Svat is a private school focused on English.
