The first written mention of Olomouc dates back to 1055. As for its historical development and importance, Olomouc may only be compared to Prague. It is the second largest urban reservation after Prague, with a unique, well-preserved pattern of medieval streets. The city centre boasts a unique piece of monumental baroque sculpture and architecture – the Holy Trinity Column. The column has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, the tenth Czech monument to be added. The impact of the Roman-Catholic Church on the city life and its spiritual, political and economic development has always been immense. The Bishopric of Olomouc was founded as early as 1063 and the importance of the city grew after it was promoted to an archbishopric in the 18th century, a fact embodied in its numerous church buildings and monuments. Visitors can also admire numerous reminders of the famous military history of the former Olomouc fortress. The town is surrounded by a ring of advanced forts; the remains of a medieval fortification are preserved in the city parks, and the bastion fortification is commemorated by the Crown Fortress. Olomouc has always been an important centre of education and culture in Moravia. The city is home to the Moravian Theatre with Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra, Museum of Regional History, Museum of Arts, numerous choirs, chamber orchestras and bands, and many small galleries. The Archdiocesan Museum was inaugurated in 2006, the Archbishop’s Palace was opened to the public in 2011, followed by the interactive science museum, Fort Science, in 2015, and the Telegraph contemporary art gallery in 2019.

The City of Olomouc is an important sports centre, which is also reflected by the prestigious title European City of Sport 2017. Since 2010, the city has been a host to the Mattoni Olomouc Running festival, the second largest event of its kind in the country, awarded with the IAAF Gold Label several times in the past. The football stadium, ice-hockey arena, swimming pool, sports hall, and tennis courts make up an enormous sports complex near the city centre. The complex also includes a number of other sport facilities, both traditional and exceptional, such as the PROUD Ropes Course and the Omega Health and Sports Centre. The Olomouc Zoo, with more than 400 animal species, is located in the splendid surroundings of Svatý Kopeček hill. Those who like golf, tennis and wellness activities can visit Dolany-Véska, about 10 km from Olomouc. With 1,150 square metres of swimming pools, both indoor and outdoor (summer), Olomouc Aquapark offers adrenaline and relaxing water features, rest areas, wellness activities, a ropes course with a 3D maze and air trampolines, restaurants and other services. Visitors to the city have the opportunity to take advantage of a wide range of accommodation facilities in all categories, from campsites to 4-star hotels and smart hotels that offer modern facilities for congresses, conferences, seminars, training courses and other similar events.
The area – where the Jeseníky foothills merge into the Morava River plain – offers wonderful leisure-time opportunities. Forty-seven hectares of green parks, a real treasure of the city, encircle the historical centre of Olomouc. International FLORA flower exhibitions take place in Olomouc every year. Lovers of water recreation and sports can use the nearby Poděbrady natural swimming pool or the new Morava River embankment, inaugurated in 2023. The Litovelské Pomoraví National Reserve – 9,600 hectares of floodplain forests – lies nearby. A visitor can see this and much more during a sightseeing flight – planes take off from the Olomouc airfield.
