With a population over 100 000, Olomouc ranks among the most important Czech cities. Thanks to its history, historic university, sophisticated culture and arts, but primarily its geographic position in the very centre of Moravia, it has always attracted tourists, businesspeople and entrepreneurs. In terms of economy, Olomouc is a city with developed industry, services and a state-of-the-art R&D environment. Its growth potential is vast due to the city’s advantageous position, long tradition of manufacturing, and skilled workforce.

In January 2001, Olomouc was made the capital of the Olomouc Region and seat of the Regional Authority of the Olomouc Region. Consisting of five districts (Olomouc, Prostějov, Přerov, Šumperk, and Jeseník), the Olomouc Region makes up 6,7 % of the Czech Republic’s territory, making it the eighth largest and sixth most populated of the 14 Czech regions. The cities of Olomouc, Přerov, and Prostějov, together with several other towns, make up the Olomouc Conurbation with a population of almost 400 000 – one of 13 metropolitan areas and agglomerations earmarked by the government as the Czech Republic’s major development hubs.

Location

The city of Olomouc lies in the Morava River valley. Elevated geographical features in the west and, mainly in the east form the boundary of lowlands surrounding the city. The city itself is thus enclosed in an elongated depression open to the northwest and to the southeast.
